Dan Borgen, Co-Chief Executive Officer
Dan still remembers when an angry seventh grade teacher labeled him an “iconoclast” (which Webster’s defines as “one who attacks cherished beliefs, traditional institutions, etc., as being based on error or superstition”). The label stuck. Now, many decades later, he continues to challenge his clients and staff to effect positive change by looking at strategies, technologies, governance, service delivery, and attendant conventional wisdom in creative new ways.
Prior to PTI, Dan:
- Helped establish and lead the Pacific Northwest strategic systems planning practice at Deloitte & Touche
- Worked at the mega-corporate establishments of Chemical Bank and General Electric
- Made a living as a professional trombonist, yoga teacher, and walrus keeper in New York City
Dan’s articles on effectively managing technology have appeared in Computerworld, InformationWeek, and the Seattle Daily Journal of Commerce. He’s also been a featured speaker on technology planning at national and regional conferences for local government organizations.
On the other side of the work/life balance, Dan likes to create odd works of art, perform onstage in some of Seattle’s funky fringe theaters, exercise, meditate, travel, and reflect on how his three kids have morphed into increasingly autonomous young adults that somehow still seem to actually enjoy hanging out with him.
Mike Silverman, Co-Chief Executive Officer
Part technologist and part strategist, Mike’s unique combination of hands-on information technology experience and strong process skills make him an outstanding agent of positive change for PTI’s clients. He thinks independently, works collaboratively, and focuses on solutions, not problems.
PTI’s clients benefit directly from Mike’s 20 years of IT experience. He has taken a leadership role with PTI’s clients in all of the firm’s practice areas. Prior to founding PTI, he:
- Worked for Deloitte & Touche Management Consulting
- Started a company that specialized in managing software development projects
- Taught yoga to university students and bounced unruly patrons from a Hartford, CT drinking establishment
Although he originally developed his computer skills at a trade school, his educational background includes an undergraduate degree from Princeton University and a Masters degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Outside of work, Mike enjoys parenting, stone carving, and touring on his motorcycle.
Nicole Simpkinson, Senior Manager
With over 14 years experience as a dedicated technology analyst, strategist and planner, Nicole has facilitated a wide variety of single and multi-agency technology initiatives for local and state government, including public safety, emergency management, and health and human services – to name just a few. Her background includes technology planning and implementation, policy and program assessment and development, process improvement, and organization design, development, and review.
Nicole graduated Magna Cum Laude from Claremont McKenna College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Policy and Organizational Studies, then went on to receive her MBA from The Anderson School at UCLA – where she graduated with honors.
Beyond the office, Nicole has spent time in Kenya learning Swahili, spelunked in Turkey, as well as ridden across the Mongolian highlands on horseback. When she has the time, Nicole enjoys exploring new places on horseback, spending time with her family, and seeking out the perfect vanilla milkshake.
Tim Morrow, Senior Consultant
While working at PTI, Tim has provided valuable input on large IT strategic planning and IT system procurement efforts, including needs and options analyses. Tim is committed to not only helping organizations better their IT systems and management, but also enabling those organizations to manage themselves more successfully.
Before graduating from Western Washington University with a degree in Business Administration, Tim gained valuable IT insight while working at Western’s Academic Technology Help Desk. Supporting the IT needs of the entire staff, faculty, and student body and working with enterprise CRM software has given Tim an inside perspective to the many benefits – and pitfalls – currently experienced by broad IT organizations.
Growing up in Colorado has turned Tim into an avid alpine skier and recreational mountain biker. In his spare time, he also enjoys camping in the mountains, lifting weights, and building fast computers for the latest games.
Meredith Slane, Consultant
Meredith’s analytic nature and eye for detail allow her to cut through the extraneous, find the root of a problem, and craft viable solutions. She employs “practical creativity” and enjoys turning theory into action. A diverse background enables her to examine a situation from several viewpoints.
Meredith earned a Masters of Science in Information Management from the University of Washington, as well as a Masters of Arts in English from Youngstown State University, where she taught English composition.
Prior to PTI, she worked at Microsoft where she used information architecture, taxonomy, and content management to make corporate knowledge more discoverable. Outside of work, Meredith enjoys the library and reads at least three books a week.
Nicholas Lee, Consultant
Focusing on the elimination of redundancy and reduction of operating costs, Nicholas excels at developing actionable IT strategies that support the critical business needs of public sector organizations. Since joining PTI, Nicholas has been engaged on multiple projects; conducting in-depth options analysis and technical requirements assessments, developing recommendations and performing ROI and NPV cost calculations.
Prior to joining PTI, Nicholas worked as a research analyst at Hebert Research where he conducted statistical and economic analysis for both public and private sector clients. He served as a research fellow at the W.P. Carey School of Business at Arizona State University while obtaining his Masters degree. Nicholas holds a Bachelor of Arts in Finance from Washington State University and is currently pursuing a Certificate in Business Intelligence from the University of Washington.
Outside of the workplace Nicholas enjoys steelhead and salmon fishing, golfing, mountaineering, ultra-lite backpacking, distance running, and traveling. He has visited over 10 countries. Some of his favorites include Thailand, where he studied international business, Switzerland, where he skied in the shadow of the Matterhorn, and Greece, where he was married at sunset on the isle of Santorini.
Laura Smith, Project Administrator
Laura is a proficient project administrator and office manager. Her mission is to handle the administrivia and logistical aspects of projects to ensure things run smoothly and on track. She is a knowledgeable contact person for quick questions, ensuring that the client can always reach someone, even when the consultants are unavailable. She is a forward thinker and organized planner, and last-minute challenges and schedule conflicts have no recourse against her “make it happen” attitude and positive approach to problem solving.
Outside of work, she shuttles her three children around to their various activities; squeezes in coursework on education reform; and golfs with her husband, despite 16 years of an elusive win against him. She also enjoys family road trips and recently drove coast to coast, winding through 8500 miles in 26 states. Her motto is that personal growth is an outlook on life, not a section in the bookstore.
